이 문제를 해설/풀이한다는 교사와 강사는 죄다 엉터리다. 왜 그럴까?

33. Heritage is concerned with the ways in which very selective material artefacts, mythologies, memories and traditions become resources for the present. The contents, interpretations and representations of the resource are selected according to the demands of the present; an imagined past provides resources for a heritage that is to be passed onto an imagined future. It follows too that the meanings and functions of memory and tradition are defined in the present. Further, heritage is more concerned with meanings than material artefacts. It is the former that give value, either cultural or financial, to the latter and explain why they have been selected from the near infinity of the past. In turn, they may later be discarded as the demands of present societies change, or even, as is presently occurring in the former Eastern Europe, when pasts have to be reinvented to reflect new presents. 우선 어휘를 정확하게 알아야 한다. 이게 수능(?), “TOEIC, TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT... 시험” 문제 풀이에 그렇게 중요하다.

정말 작가라 할 수 있는 사람들은, 우리말로 글을 작성할 때에도 바로 옆에 국어사전 몇 권을 두고 철자가 잘못되었는지, 우리말 어법이 바른지 꼭 확인한다. 영어도 마찬가지다.

“heritage”에서, “heri-”는 “남겨진 (것)”을 의미하고, “-age”는 “모두, 전체”를 의미한다. 따라서 그 어원으로 보면, “heritage”는 누구 죽고 난 다음 남겨진 것 모두를 의미한다.

법(= law)에서는 “heritage”를 후손(= 상속자)에게 전달되는 “real and other property”로 규정한다.

그리고

일반적으로

“heritage”는 선대로 부터 물려받은 물건/건물, 권리, 전통/지식/관습... 등등을 의미한다.

그 다음,

“concerned”은 오늘날 영어에서 3가지 의미로 사용된다.

① 우려하는/걱정하는

② 관련이 있는(= be affected by, be involved in)

③ 다루는/취급하는(= be interested in, dealing with) “be concerned with” 형태로

사실 이 지문은 “be concerned with”만 정확하게 알고 있어도 어느 정도 그 의미를 파악할 수가 있다. 아래 예문을 보자.

아니, 그리고 미국에서 대학이나 대학원 과정을 경험해 보았다면 학기 초에 교수가, “synopsis”나누어 주면서, 그 과목 설명하는데, 전형적으로 등장하는 표현이 “be concerned with”이다.

가령

Evolutionary biology is concerned with ultimate causes or historical explanations of an organism’s properties. Evolutionary biology explains ...

이런 식으로 되어 있다.

심지어

Geological heritage is concerned with the conservation of geological and geomorphological features and processes.

여기 내용에서는, “Geological heritage”는 교과 과목 명칭이다. 이런 것을 모른다... 미국 대학에서 공부 해 보았다면, 이런 것 정도는 당연히 안다. 물론 수능영어 가르치는 아이들이 미국 유학 경험이 없어도 된다지만... 엉터리로 가르치면 곤란하다. 그리고 EBS 영어 해설하는 아이들의 자질이 정말 의심스럽다.

즉, “be concerned with”의 의미와 용법을 정확하게 알아도

“Heritage is concerned with the ways in which...” 이러면, 이 문장의 의미를 대충 파악한다. 여기에 “the ways in which...”도 있다. 한 마디로 “how”를 의미한다.

설사 “heritage”를 “유물, 문화유적/유산”으로 번역해도, “be concerned with”와 “the ways in which...”를 보면서 저게 머지? 왜 사용되었지? 이렇게 해야 하지!!!

언젠가, 나중에, 대전 어느 외고에서 Native Speaker 영어강사를 한 적이 있는, “Stephen Angelique”라는 녀석이 저녁에, “Harvard University”를 향해 손가락질하면서, 미국 정치가 폭삭 썩어도(= rotten), 미국 종교에서 썩은 냄새가 진동해도(= putrid), 저 곳만 온전하면 모두 재건할 수 있다” 이런 말을 대략 30년 전에 나에게 한 것을 아직도 생생하게 기억한다.

분필을 든 사람은 정말 사명 의식을 가지고, 가르치는 분야, 가령 영어면 영어에는 위선이나 사기 치지 말고, 자기도 모르는 것을 두고 사기 쳐서 돈 벌려고 하지 말고, 정말 정직하고 성실하게 공부하고, 가르쳐라!!! 아이들 앞에 부끄럽지 않고, 당당하게 나서라!!!
